Elder Gubler and Elder Taylor

Kanasin missionaries

March 26, 2012 letter

Dear Family,

I sent a picture of me and Elder Taylor.  I also sent a picture of me, Elder Lima, and the missionaries from Kanasin 2, and now the 3 of them will be companions.  There are 4 missionaries in Ticul.  We have everything west of street 34.  Our branch is called Sierra.  The other missionaries have branches Centro and Huerta.  We also cover Chapab.  I haven`t been learning any Mayan, but I will study my vocabulary list for when we go over there.   We will be going there twice a week.  I don`t know why the 2 of us came at the same time.  The other missionaries that were here both left.  One of them had been here for 6 months, and the other for 3.  I`m still district leader.  The district is Ticul and Muna, one of the places where Elder Portillo served.  Elder Taylor has been out for 2 transfers.  He already finished his training with his other companion.  I like being with him a lot more than with the natives.  Ticul reminds me of a few parts of Champoton.  There are more trees here and a lot more hills.  The members give us food every day.  Its really good.  Everything here is a lot closer.  We have members close by, the church is 3 blocks away, and we have bikes.  I think its hotter here because its farther inland.

The other building in Ticul is connected to the broadcast system, so we will be seeing conference there.  The building we are in was built in 2009.  It should be getting internet and satilite soon.  The people here have the same technology as us, its just a lot less common because its more expensive and the people make less.  The stake president in Kanasin has an ipad.  David`s wife and kids are doing great.  He hasn`t been going to church because of work, but on his day off he didn`t go to church.  I haven't heard anything from Spencer Gubler.  I would recommend that Kimi go to Dixie.  It will be a lot warmer and there won't be alot of people trying to get married.  I haven't been too diligent in my journal writing, but I`ll get better at it.  Elder Taylor is really good at keeping a journal and I`ll have him to motivate me.

This week we should have 3 baptisms.  There is a couple that the other missionaries were teaching that should get baptized this week.  We also got a reference for a daughter of less actives.  Next week I`ll go to the restaurant with Elder Taylor.  Thanks for inviting us.

Love,
Elder Gubler

March 19, 2012 letter

Dear Family,

Sorry the email is so late.  Today we had transfers.  I´m in Ticul, Yucatan.  Its about an hour south of Merida.  There are 2 branches and 2 chapels here.  The area I'm in has a church that was built a few years ago.  It's really nice.  I'm here with Elder Taylor from Georgia.  We are both new to the area.  We came here in a motorcycle taxi from the bus terminal and had another motorcycle taxi behind us with our luggage.  We had an address and the keys to a house that we had never been to.  The taxi took us to street 48-a instead of 48.  We got to the house that we thought was ours, but as my companion was trying the keys in the door, some guy opened up.  We asked him if he knew where we lived, but he didn't know.  We tried another street and another house that looked empty, but the keys didn't work.  We tried another street and found a member there.  She told us how to get to our house.  We got there, dropped everything off, and went to eat and wash our clothes.  We have bikes in this area.  I think I'm going to like it here.  We had to cut our email time short because it's late.  I´ll write next week.

Love,
Elder Gubler

March 12, 2012 letter

Dear Family,

We didn´t have the baptism this week because the rest of the family was working, but this Tuesday we will have it.  His name is Oscar. He´s 15.  When we got done teaching him on Wednesday, he threw his cat into a trench to see what would happen.  I started laughing because it reminded me of myself.  I told him about when I threw Stormy off of the deck when I was 3.

There was a youth at church that had a nice shirt on.  I asked him if he wanted to trade.  He told me that next time we went to his house he would give it to me.  We passed by this week and he gave it to me.  It's a nice pink shirt.  They are called ´Guayaveras´.  They are from Yucatan.  I´ll have to try it out when I get home.  I finally sent pictures of our house.  Sorry it took so long.  That style of house is what a lot of the people live in.  Its like a subdivision here.  Can you imagine having the 7 of us live there.  It has 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.  I also sent some pictures of an activity that we had on Friday.  The theme was Lehi´s dream.  We had to follow the iron rod blindfolded.  Nobody from our area went, but the activity was still fun.  We haven´t been having too much success lately, but we´ll keep going.

Today we went to Costco.  I bought 2 jugs of Sunny D and some new Cinnabon things.  They don´t have as many free samples there as they do in our Costco, but it was enough.  Afterwards I bought a beef dog and a frozen yogurt.  I was thinking about buying some of their Kirkland ice cream, but we didn´t have anywhere to keep it cool during the day, so I passed.  Maybe I´ll talk to a member to see if he can get me some next time he goes.  Can you check how much I have in Wells Fargo?

Love,
Elder Gubler

March 5, 2012 letter

Dear Family,

Elder Lima has been really tired lately, so Sister Salinas recommended that he get these shots.  They are just a few vitamins for the brain. There is an Elder in our zone that went to medical school, so from now on we´ll just have him administer the injections on pday.  He has to get them once a week for 5 or 6 weeks.  We didn't have the baptisms this week.  We are going to get them ready for Saturday.

Last night we found another great family and I´m really excited to teach them. We contacted the husband on our way to church and told him we would visit in the evening.  We passed by and he told us about his minor financial problems that he has had these last few years.  We taught him about  the people in the Book of Mormon about how they started keeping the commandments after the wars and began to prosper, but remained humble.  We told him that if he would keep the commandments that things would work out.  He told us that when he lived in Merida he had lots of friends that joined the church and saw that their lives improved.  This is the kind of thing we love to hear.

Today in the motor-taxi, the driver asked us what we were doing here.  We explained a little bit and set up an appointment for Wednesday.  He has a normal 8-5 work schedule (most work until after 10:00 pm so we can't teach them).  He also told us that he doesn`t drink or smoke.  He`s 19 and he and his wife have a 3 year old.  Last week we found an inactive member and went to teach  him and his wife, who we found out is a ´´Dancer´´ (that uses 12 inch high-heels and works at night).  This should be a good week for us.

Too bad that Lora lost her game, but there`s always next year.  I remember going to the Circus there.  I also got to see Zach Efron play basketball there when I went to see ´High School Musical on Ice´ How tall is Emily´s husband?  Sorry I didn`t send any pictures.  I left my camera in the house.  I´ll get them next week.

Love,
Elder Gubler
